Delicious Food and Fine Wines For A Good Cause

Mar 31 11 07:46 AM

On Thursday, March 24, 2011, my friend Joan and I attended the 19th Annual Waltham Food & Wine Festival at the Westin Hotel in Waltham, MA.  The event, which was organized by The Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation, showcased 20 restaurants within Waltham and the surrounding vicinity. Wines chosen by a connoisseur from Gordon’s Fine Wines & Liquors were also served.

The event was well attended and everyone enjoyed the scrumptious and attractive fare served by the following participants: Paellas at your Place by Antonio, Lizzy’s Homemade Ice Cream, Waltham High Culinary Arts, Bombay Mahal, Kitchen on Common, Firenze, Bertucci’s Italian Restaurant, The Chateau, Edible Arrangements, Glam Foods, The Grille at Hobbs Brook, Margaritas Mexican Restaurant, More than Words, Popkins Ice Cream, Seventy@3rd – Westin, Solea, The Tea Leaf, The Upper Crust, and Wings Express.

That evening, I had the pleasure of savoring two very special dishes and three tasty desserts.  As my friend and I entered the hall where the affair was being held, the inviting aroma of Chef Antonio M. Portugal’s paellas greeted us.  The irresistible smell got us to turn right by the door and ask for our samples.  Fresh mussels, clams, shrimps, chorizo and special herbs & spices over Bomba rice – an authentic Spanish delicacy! Paellas at Your Place by Antonio is definitely at the top of the list of caterers to consider for my next home event.

After Joan and I enjoyed the paellas, we listened to the beautiful voices of the a cappella group Talk to the Hand while heading to Kitchen on Common from Belmont.  We sampled their roasted cauliflower agro dolce. The crunchy veggie was complemented with pine nuts, capers, golden raisins & balsamic syrup. This was one appetizing, healthy food!

The chocolate gelato from Firenze, the homemade rum-raisin ice cream from Lizzy’s Homemade Ice Cream, and the chocolate dipped strawberries from the Waltham High Culinary Arts were all truly mouth-watering. I salute the students from Waltham High for preparing and serving such delicious desserts – fresh sweet strawberries dipped in a variety of premium chocolate.  I tried the one dipped in dark chocolate, and what a treat it was! I really cannot choose which of the three sweets I tasted was my most favorite, but I know for sure that I will be visiting Firenze and Lizzy’s Homemade Ice Cream very soon.

By the time I got to visit Bombay Mahal, I was too full to try another dish and I ended up just taking pictures of the delicious-looking Indian cuisines. Fortunately, Anver, the owner, agreed to meet with me at his restaurant.  By then I will get a taste of Bombay Mahal’s fine cuisine and perhaps even dedicate a special blog entry about it.

How about you, do you have a favorite dish? Can you share what you like most about it?

A Post for MassChallenge

Mar 27 11 07:25 PM

This blog entry is a copy of a posting from MassChallenge.  I am sharing this with you to help promote this fantastic non-profit organization based in Boston, MA.

MassChallenge is running a global startup competition and accelerator to catalyze the launch and success of high-growth, high-impact new businesses. Last summer, I was honored to participate in the first contest which launched on April 14, 2010 and received ~450 entries. Sixteen winners were announced on October 21, 2010 and split $1M in cash awards. Following the 2010 final ceremony, President Obama announced MassChallenge as an initiative of Startup America. Since then, MassChallenge finalists have raised $30M in follow-on financing and created 300 jobs.

The competition is open to anyone in the world, with any new startup, in any industry. Physical activities are based in Massachusetts where innovation resources are highly concentrated. Every entrant receives training, feedback, PR and networking support via expert volunteers from partner organizations. 110 of the highest-potential startups will participate in a 3 month accelerator program. Active focus areas, a curriculum and bootcamp, investor in residence program, alumni in residence program, and expert mentorship make up the accelerator. The very best startups are identified by expert judges to receive cash awards toward launching their businesses along with enhanced PR and privileged access to top investors seeking to place seed capital to work in high-growth firms. MassChallenge is a 501(c)(3) (non-profit) leveraging both public and private funding. Key dates for this year are March 7th (online application goes live) and April 11th (deadline for final submission).

Apply online at www.masschallenge.org/enter.
